Farm field with dark storm clouds in the background. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina can handle your storm damage emergency.

Spring weather in the Midwest can bring thunderstorms and high winds into our area quickly.  It is important to be aware of the dangers that are associated with them.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration offer some information about wind warnings, watches, and advisories:

High Wind Warning: Take Action! Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheel.

High Wind Watch: Be Prepared! Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose items and adjust plans as necessary so you are not caught outside.

Wind Advisory: Take Action! Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong to warrant a High Wind Warning. Objects outdoors should be secured, and caution should be taken if driving.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Take Action! A thunderstorm is happening or is imminent in the warning area. Severe thunderstorms have 58 miles per hour wind gusts and/or hail one inch or larger. Seek shelter inside a sturdy building.

Preparing for High Winds

  • Remove any dead trees or overhanging branches near structures
  • Remove loose objects outdoors, on patios, roofs, or balconies that could blow away
  • Shutter windows securely and brace outside doors
  • Bring in unsecured objects from outside and secure things that could blow away and cause damage or injury

Storm Season is Approaching

3/15/2022 (Permalink)

Black road with a dark sky and white lightning in the background. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina will respond to your storm damage emergency.

The weather in the Midwest can change quickly and bring powerful storms into our area.  Here are a few tips from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prepare for storm season:

Tornadoes often accompany thunderstorms. Pay close attention to changing weather conditions when there is a severe thunderstorm watch or warning.

  • A severe thunderstorm watch means severe thunderstorms are possible in your area.
  • A severe thunderstorm warning means severe thunderstorms are occurring in your area.

Know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning

Tornado watch

A tornado watch means that a tornado is possible. A tornado watch is issued when weather conditions favor the formation of tornadoes.

During a tornado watch, you should

  • Stay tuned to local radio and TV stations, or your mobile phone for further weather information.
  • Watch the weather and be prepared to take shelter immediately if conditions worsen.

Tornado warning

A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. You should immediately take shelter during a tornado warning.

Fireplace Safety Tips

2/28/2022 (Permalink)

Stone fireplace with a big fire burning. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

There is nothing like warming up by a fire in the fireplace, but a dirty chimney can cause a house fire.  Creosote is a black or brown residue that can build up over time and could cause a fire.  It is important to make sure that your chimney is clean and safe for a fire.

Follow these tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for preventing creosote buildup that can cause chimney fires:

Limited air supply and unseasoned wood encourage the buildup of creosote. To avoid that buildupdo not restrict the air supply by:

  • Closing the glass doors
  • Not opening the damper wide enough
  • The longer the smoke is in the flue, the more likely it is that creosote will form
  • Do not burn unseasoned wood

Fireplace Safety

  • Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out
  • Do not burn paper in your fireplace
  • Put ashes in a metal container with a lid, outside, at least three feet from your home
  • Put the fire out before you go to sleep or leave your home

  • Return home only when authorities say it is safe
  • Avoid driving except in emergencies
  • Wear heavy work gloves, protective clothing, and boots during clean up and use appropriate face coverings or masks if cleaning mold or other debris
  • Be aware that snakes or other animals may be in your house
  • Be aware of the risk of electrocution. Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. Turn off the electricity to prevent shock if it is safe to do so.

Keep your Animals Safe from Winter Weather

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

Brown dog playing in the snow. If you experience winter storm damage, SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina is available 24-hours a day.

The snow is falling in the Minneapolis area, and more is on the way.  The snow can be a pretty sight, but it can also cause dangerous cold and icy conditions for many of us.  In addition to our safety, we also must think about the safety of our animals.

Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to protect your animals during a winter storm:

  • Bring your companion animals indoors.
  • Create a place where your other animals can be comfortable in severe winter weather. Horses and livestock should have a shelter where they can be protected from wind, snow, ice, and rain. Grazing animals should have access to a protected supply of food and non-frozen water.
  • Be aware of the potential for flooding when snow and ice melt and be sure that your animals have access to high ground that is not impeded by fencing or other barriers. You may not be able to get to them in time to relocate them in the event of flooding.
  • Install snow fences in rural areas to reduce drifting snow on roads and paths, which could block access to homes, barns, and animals' feed and water.

If you experience a storm damage emergency, SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake Medina has a team of highly trained technicians that are available 24-hours a day.  Please call us at 763-557-7323.

Safety Tips for your Microwave

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

Kitchen with a microwave in a blue island with wood floors. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina provides 24-hour service for any fire damage emergency.

The microwave oven is a great kitchen appliance that provides a quick and easy way to reheat a meal or warm up a cup of coffee.  It is always important to follow a few tips to prevent burns or a possible fire.

Here are some microwave safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Purchase a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way, the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall on the product.
  • Plug the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet — never use an extension cord
  • Make sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users
  • Open food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam or the food itself can cause burns.
  • Food heats unevenly in microwave ovens. Stir and test before eating or giving to children.
  • Never heat a baby bottle in the microwave. Since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, leading to burns.

Safety Tips for Cooking with Oil

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

Deep fryer with hot oil and an orange SERVPRO logo. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

Deep fry day is a favorite day in our household.  This is a day that we deep fry all types of food.  We start in the morning with homemade doughnuts and end the day with deep fried twinkies.  Safety is always on our mind as we work with the hot oil in the Kitchen.  Here are some cooking safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

Safety considerations for cooking with oil

  • Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stovetop.
  • Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner and/or carefully remove the pan from the burner. Smoke is a danger sign that the oil is too hot.
  • Heat the oil slowly to the temperature you need for frying or sautéing.
  • Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil does not splatter.
  • Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water on the fire.
  • If the fire does not go out or you don’t feel comfortable sliding a lid over the pan, get everyone out of your home. Call the fire department from outside.

Tips to Avoid a Soggy Disaster in Plymouth

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

Turning page of a book with an orange SERVPRO logo. Follow these tips to keep your belongings safe from water damage.

Water damage is one of the most common disasters that your home can experience.  Our homes are filled with many items that range from household items, toys, games, books, and many treasured heirlooms.  It is important to take steps to protect these items in case you experience water damage in your home.

Here are a few tips from the Insurance Information Institute to avoid a soggy disaster:

  • Store off-season and other bulk belongings in waterproof bins, especially in areas where there are plumbing pipes or that are prone to dampness, such as basements and attics.
  • Never store valuables or memorabilia where there is a risk of destruction from water. Water and dampness also bring with it the threat of mold damage.
  • Keep belongings stored on shelving off the floor in basements. In case of water seepage or sewer backup, they're less likely to get damaged.
  • Keep an up-to-date home inventory. Having a comprehensive list of your possessions will save time, trouble, and stress in case of loss from water damage.

Stay Safe While Traveling - Hotel & Motel Safety Tips

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

Hotel room with one bed and a table in the background. Keep these safety tips in mind when traveling.

Vacations and business travel make hotels and motels our home away from home. It is just as important to be prepared and know what you would do in a hotel/motel emergency as it is in your own home.  Here are a few tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to stay safe while traveling:

  • Choose a hotel/motel that is protected by both smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system.
  • When you check in, ask the front desk what the fire alarm sounds like.
  • When you enter your room, review the escape plan posted in your room.
  • Take the time to find the exits and count the number of doors between your room and the exit. Make sure the exits are unlocked. If they are locked, report it to management right away.
  • Keep your room key by your bed and take it with you if there is a fire.
  • If the alarm sounds, leave right away, closing all doors behind you. Use the stairs — never use elevators during a fire.
  • If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit.

White clothes dryer. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina can help if you experience fire damage.

Taking out the garbage, sweeping the floor, and doing laundry are just a few daily chores that you may perform during a normal day. It is important to protect your home from a fire disaster by following a few simple tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to avoid a clothes dryer fire:

  • Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional
  • Do not use the dryer without a lint filter
  • Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry
  • Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time
  • Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Once a year, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.
  • Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks.
  • Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly
  • Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer
  • Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed

Flood Safety - Be Ready

Flooded road with a car driving with headlights on. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

Know the Difference between a flood watch and a flood warning.

A flood/flash flood WATCH means a flood or flash flood is possible.

A flood/flash flood WARNING means flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon.

Here are a few tips from Ready.gov to know about how to stay safe during a flood:

  • Find safe shelter right away.
  • Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters.
  • Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
  • Depending on the type of flooding:
    • Evacuate if told to do so.
    • Move to higher ground or a higher floor.
    • Stay where you are.

Let SERVPRO clean your Drapes & Blinds

6/30/2021 (Permalink)

White drapes with a SERVPRO logo in the middle. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina can clean your drapes and blinds.

SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina excels at cleaning fine fabrics and intricate pieces using wet or dry cleaning methods as required.  We carefully inspect and test fabrics to determine which of our System’s five cleaning methods is best suited to your fabrics.  We use state-of-the-art equipment designed specifically for cleaning fine fabrics.

When Should My Drapes Be Cleaned?

A good rule-of-thumb is to clean drapes approximately every two years.  A recent survey by SERVPRO disclosed that the average customer believes drapes should be cleaned when they look dirty.  Depending on your heating system, the amount of dust in the home, and other factors, drapes may not show soil for two to six years.  The oily atmospheric soil will gradually cause the fabric to deteriorate.  Often, direct sunlight is unjustly blamed for this.  You may triple the life of your draperies through professional cleaning, which is relatively inexpensive compared to replacement costs.

If you your drapes or blinds cleaned, please call SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina at 763-557-7323.

A Small Leak Can Make a Big Mess

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

A white bathroom sink with a gray backsplash and a white candle. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina has a team of water restoration technicians available 24 hours a day.

A leaky ice maker, a broken supply line to the washing machine, or a sink backup that overflows on the bathroom floor.  These are just some of the many causes of water damage that can happen in your home.  The following are a few tips from the Insurance Information Institute to maintain your indoor plumbing systems:

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets.  Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerator ice makers.  You may also want to invest in a water leak monitoring and shut-off system that can alert you to any leakage issues.  Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks.
  • Inspect showers and tubs.  Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine and never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home.  A damaged hose or a burst pipe can send water racing into your home.  Being able to locate and shut off the main water supply quickly will save stress, money and time.
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system.  This will protect against the increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes.  Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina has highly trained technicians that are available 24 hours a day to help with any type of water damage emergency.  Please contact us at 763-557-7323.

Burning match with an orange flame on a black background. It is important to teach children about fire safety.

SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina has responded to many types of fire damage and we know that it is never too early to teach children about fire safety. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), some children play with fire out of curiosity, boredom, or peer pressure and do not realize the danger fire poses. Each year children cause fires that result in hundreds of injuries and millions of dollars in damage. Here are some safety tips from NFPA to keep your family safe:

  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children, up high, preferably in a locked cabinet
  • Closely supervise children, making sure that they are kept away from other fire sources, including lit candles, cigarettes, bonfires, and stoves
  • It is natural for young children to be curious and ask questions about fire, play with fire trucks, or pretend to cook. Use these opportunities to teach them about fire safety
  • Explain that fire moves very fast and can hurt as soon as it touches them. Tell them that this is why matches and lighters are tools for adults only
  • Establish clear rules and consequences about unsupervised and unauthorized uses of fire

4/19/2021 (Permalink)

White smoke alarm with a black background. Special smoke alarms are available for hearing impaired people.

Working smoke alarms save lives.  However, people who are deaf or hard of hearing may not be able to depend on the traditional smoke alarm to alert them to a fire.  The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers these safety tips for hearing impaired people:

  • Smoke alarms and alert devices are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Strobe lights that flash when the smoke alarm sounds. The lights warn people of a possible fire
  • When people who are deaf are asleep, a pillow or bed shaker can wake them so they can escape. The shaker is activated by the sound of a smoke alarm
  • When people who are hard of hearing are asleep, an alert device that uses a loud, mixed, low-pitched sound can wake them. They may find a pillow or bed shaker helpful. These devices are triggered by the sound of the smoke alarm
  • Research the products and select the ones that best meet your needs

  • When you hear thunder, go indoors. A sturdy building is the safest place to be during a thunderstorm
  • Pay attention to weather reports and warnings of thunderstorms. Be ready to change plans, if necessary, to be near shelter
  • When you receive a thunderstorm warning or hear thunder, go inside immediately

  • If boating or swimming, get to land and find a sturdy, grounded shelter or vehicle immediately
  • If necessary, take shelter in a car with a metal top and sides. Do not touch anything metal
  • Avoid flooded roadways. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away

Keep your Basement Dry

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

Standing water at the bottom of a stairway. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina is available 24 hours a day to respond to your water damage.

Spring has sprung in the Minneapolis area and with it comes rainy days.  One of the places to keep an eye out for water leaks is in your basement.  Basement seepage is a common problem and with a little advanced planning can easily be avoided.  Here are a few tips form the Insurance Information Institute for preventing basement water seepage:

  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall potentially through any cracks.
  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you've never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.

If you experience water damage in your home, SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long lake / Medina has a team of highly trained technicians to assist you.  We are available 24 hours a day.  You can reach us at 763-557-7323.

Electrical Safety Reminders

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

White power outlet on a white wall. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina is always ready to help with any size fire damage.

Think about how often we use electricity during a normal day.  We may start our day by turning off an alarm clock and then heading to the kitchen to plug in the coffee maker.  That is just the beginning of all the things around the house that we use on a daily basis.  Electricity makes our lives easier however, we need to keep safety in mind.  Here are a few safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

  • Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician.
  • When you are buying or remodeling a home, have it inspected by a qualified private inspector or in accordance with local requirements.
  • Only use one heat-producing appliance (such as a coffee maker, toaster, space heater, etc.) plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time.
  • Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, microwave ovens, etc.) should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used.
  • Use ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of shock. GFCIs shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and basements. All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected.

SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina has highly trained technicians that are available 24 hours a day.  Call us at 763-557-7323.  We’ll clean and restore your fire damage, “Like it never even happened.”

Keeping your Pets Safe from Fire

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Grey and white cat looking up at a puppy with light brown fur. Follow these tips to keep your pets safe from fire in your home.

Pets are a big part of our lives; they are often considered part of our family.  We need to make sure that we keep our pets safe inside our homes.  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) pets and wild animals are responsible for starting 750 home fires each year.  The following are a few sources that your pet may have exposure to:

  • Cooking equipment
  • Fireplaces
  • Chimneys
  • Space heaters
  • Lamps
  • Bulbs
  • Wiring
  • Candles

Here are a few safety tips from NFPA to keep your pets safe in your home:

  • Pets may bump into, turn on, or knock over cooking equipment so keep them away from stoves and countertops.
  • Keep pets away from candles, lamps, and space heaters.
  • Use a heat-tempered glass screen on a fireplace and keep it in place.
  • Keep pets away from chimney’s outside vents.
  • Create a “pet-free zone” of at least three feet away from the fireplace.
  • Use battery-operated, flameless candles.
  • Keep pets away from electrical cords that they might want to chew.
  • Make sure your pets are included in your emergency evacuation plan.

Tips for Outdoor Grilling

9/9/2020 (Permalink)

Meat and vegetables on a black round grill. Enjoy outdoor grilling with these safety tips.

As the warm days of summer begin to fade, there will be cooler fall days to still enjoy the taste of a meal cooked outside on the grill.  Here are some safety tips provided by the National Fire Protection Association to keep in mind when grilling:

General Grill Safety Tips:

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

If you have a Charcoal Grill:

  • There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Please stay safe with your outdoor grilling with the help of these safety tips.  If you have any questions about Fire or Smoke damage, please contact SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina at 763-557-7323.

Beat the Summer Heat with these Safety Tips

7/20/2020 (Permalink)

A wooden thermometer with a blue sky and white clouds in the background. Follow these safety tips to stay cool & hydrated this summer.

As we approach the middle of summer in the Minneapolis area extreme temperatures continue to rise, be ready to battle the summer heat by following these tips from the CDC:

Stay Cool:

  • Wear appropriate clothing: Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Stay cool indoors: Stay in an air-conditioned place as much as possible.  If your home does not have air conditioning, go somewhere that does, even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
  • Plan outdoor activities carefully:  Try to limit your outdoor activity to when it is coolest, like morning and evening hours.
  • Pace yourself: Start slowly and pick up the pace gradually.
  • Wear sunscreen: If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
  • Avoid cooking hot meals: They add heat to your body!

Stay Hydrated:

  • Drink plenty of fluids: Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are.  Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink.
  • Replace salt and minerals: Sweating removes salt and minerals from the body that need to be replaced.  A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.
  • Keep your pets hydrated: Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets.

SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina want to make sure you stay cool this summer.  Give us a call at (763) 557-7323 if you have any questions.

Staying Safe from a Tornado

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

Black tornado funnel cloud on a road next to a car with telephone poles in the background. Follow the tips to stay safe if you are under a tornado warning.

With springtime weather arriving in the Midwest, the weather can change quickly and bring powerful storms to our area.  Being prepared for the unexpected can help keep you safe during a storm.  Here are a few tips from Ready.gov to prepare for a Tornado:

Tornadoes can destroy buildings, flip cars, and create deadly flying debris. Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes can:

  • Happen anytime and anywhere
  • Bring intense winds, over 200 MPH
  • Look like funnels.

IF YOU ARE UNDER A TORNADO WARNING, FIND SAFE SHELTER RIGHT AWAY

  • If you can safely get to a sturdy building, then do so immediately.
  • Go to a safe room, basement, or storm cellar.
  • If you are in a building with no basement, then get to a small interior room on the lowest level.
  • Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls.
  • Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You’re safer in a low, flat location.
  • Watch out for flying debris that can cause injury or death.
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck.

If you have suffered storm damage caused by a tornado or a strong windstorm, please call SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina for help – (763) 557-7323.

Sewage Cleanup and Categories of Water

4/16/2020 (Permalink)

Water flowing down into a water circle with blue water drops in the background. SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina can help with water cleanup in your home or business.

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness.  Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

There are three major types of contaminated water.  SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina will inspect that contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your home or business.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet.  If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested.  Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided.  Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

24 Emergency Service

Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible.  We are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business.  Call us at (763) 557-7323.

Hoarding can be a Fire Hazard

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

Stacks of newspapers bundled with a brown rope. Clutter caused by hoarding can be a fire hazard in your home.

Do you have a person in your life who may be a hoarder?  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), hoarding is a condition where a person has persistent difficulty discarding personal possessions.  The large amount of possessions fill the home and prevent the normal use of the space.  Living space becomes cluttered making it unusable as the space was designed.  Hoarding can lead to fire hazards in the home.

Why Hoarding Increases Fire Risks:

  • Cooking is unsafe if flammable items are close to the stove or oven.
  • Heating units may be too close to things that can burn. They might also be placed on unstable surfaces. If a heater tips over into a pile, it can cause a fire.
  • Open flames from smoking materials or candles in a home with excess clutter are very dangerous.
  • Blocked pathways and exits may hinder escape from a fire.

How Hoarding Impacts First Responders:

  • Hoarding puts first responders in harm’s way.
  • Firefighters cannot move swiftly through a home filled with clutter.
  • Responders can be trapped in a home when exits are blocked. They can be injured by objects falling from piles.
  • The weight of the stored items, especially if water is added to put out a fire, can lead to building collapse.
  • Fighting fires is very risky in a hoarding home. It is hard to enter the home to provide medical care. The clutter impedes the search and rescue of people and pets.

SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina has experience with cleaning hoarding homes.  If a family member is struggling and you need assistance, please call our office at (763) 557-7323.  We will be happy to assist you in making your home a safe place.

SERVPRO uses Specialized Equipment

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

Two SERVPRO employees lifting a dehumidifier out of a van. SERVPRO uses state of the art equipment for your restoration needs.

The past few decades has seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry.  These advancements allow SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long lake / Medina Professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets practical standards for restoration and cleaning.  The IICRC S500 Water Damage Guide is a specific set of practical standards that incorporate the field of psychometry, which involves the manipulation of temperature and relative humidity to remove moisture and dry a property quickly and effectively.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment:

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure, and monitor a property’s moisture levels.  Recent advances, like infrared cameras, can help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.

  • An infrared camera may be used to identify water location for thorough water removal.
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation.

Water Extraction Equipment:

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business.

  • Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.

Drying Equipment:

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from ceiling, walls, and floors of your home or business.  Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.

  • High-speed air movers cause moisture to evaporate at a faster pace.
  • Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

Tips for Candle Safety in your Home

4/14/2020 (Permalink)

White candle with a flame with a black background. Follow these tips when using candles in your home.

Candles may be pretty to look at and provide a great fragrance in your home, but they can also be a cause of a house fire.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, 3 out of every 5 candle fires start when things that can burn are placed too close to the candle.  Here are some tips that you should follow for candle safety:

  • Blow out candles before leaving a room or going to bed
  • Keep candles one foot away from anything that can burn
  • Use a sturdy candle holder, that will not tip over easily
  • Put candle holders on a sturdy and unclutter surface
  • Light candles carefully, keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame
  • Do not let the candle burn all the way to the bottom; put it out before it gets too close to the container or holder
  • You should not light a candle if oxygen is used in the home
  • During a power outage, use a flashlight or battery-operated lighting instead of a candle

Remember candles are an open flame which means they can easily ignite.  As an alternative, consider using flameless candles.

If you have any additional questions about fire or smoke damage, please feel free to contact SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina at (763) 557-7323.

Using a Portable Fire Extinguisher

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

Red fire extinguisher with a black hose. A portable fire extinguisher is an important fire safety tool.

A portable fire extinguisher can be a life and property saving tool when used correctly.  Read the instructions on the fire extinguisher and become familiar with them before a fire breaks out.  In order to operate an extinguisher, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests remembering the word PASS:

  • Pull the pin. Hold the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
  • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
  • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

Use a portable fire extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called; and the room is not filled with smoke.

Mold in the House: SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina provides mold remediation for your home or office

6/19/2018 (Permalink)

When mold is discovered, SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina will provide an assessment, containment and expert mold remediation

Discovering mold in your home or office can be alarming.  If mold is discovered, you can contact SERVPRO for an assessment before taking any action.  First things first, do not attempt to clean, scrub or disturb mold, as the spores will easily distribute into the air.  If you have fans or an open window nearby blowing in the area, turn it off or eliminate any breezes.  Mold spreads easily and by scrubbing it or allowing wind to reach the affected area, the spores will simply move to another area.

Removing Mold from the House or Office

Calling a mold remediation expert like SERVPRO will allow for a number of actions to take place. The first thing we do is find the source of the mold.  There may be a leak, a water or moisture source that contributed to the mold growth.  Our trained mold technicians will find the source, eliminate further damage, assess the situation, contain the existing problem and remove the mold.  Also, we will professionally clean the affected areas and contents, as well as provide air filtration and provide any restoration, if needed.

What to do with Mold

If you find mold in the house or office, again, here are a few tips on what to do (and what not to do):

  • Do not touch or scrub mold
  • Turn off any fans or blowing air (HVAC)
  • Do not spray any bleach or chemicals on the mold
  • Do not try to dry the area or use any heaters (you will spread spores)
  • Call SERVPRO of Plymouth / Long Lake / Medina

After a Fire: Cleaning up after smoke and fire damage in the Plymouth/Long Lake/Medina Area

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Damaged by a fire, this smoke and soot covered wall was cleaned by the SERVPRO of Plymouth/Long Lake/Medina team.

When a fire erupted in a residential apartment building in the Plymouth area of Minnesota, the local fire department responded immediately, extinguishing the fire. The fire and smoke damage displaced many families, and created a massive clean-up effort for SERVPRO.

Fire, Smoke and Soot Damage

The fire burned inside 2 units of a large apartment building, creating heavy structural damage. All told, residents from a total of 12 units were impacted and suddenly without a home. The fire and smoke damage was present throughout nearly all of the units adjacent to where the fire took place. There was also water inside several apartments from the fire department’s response, coupled with smoke smell and soot covering the walkways and stairwells, making the entire building uninhabitable for residents. After this fire took place, SERVPRO was called to assist in the immediate cleanup and mitigation from the fire damaged structure.

Cleaning Smoke and Soot Damage

The fire created structural damage in two units, but heavy smoke damage and soot covered walls, furniture and personal belongings in many of the adjoining units. Outside of the living areas, the signs of fire were found throughout the building.  Smoke and soot damage covered brick walls up and down staircases.  As part of the cleanup, SERVPRO was called in to clean the charred walls and restore the appearance of the building.  Using a combination of commercial cleaning materials and steam cleaning, SERVPRO crews performed a thorough cleaning of all the damaged segments of the brick walls, removing all traces of the smoke and soot damage, making the brick and the fire damage “Like it never even happened.”

While the technicians work on the building, disposing of compromised materials, and drying the rest, they will also destroy all mold and microbial colonies. This is the only way to ensure a home is safe to live, and a business safe to work in; any other cleaning method is a dangerous gamble.

Understanding the Fire Restoration Process

Soot odor can linger long after a house fire, ozone machines can get rid of the odor once and for all.

We are always here to help!

It is imperative that fire restoration should be implemented as soon as possible after a house fire is out. The longer the delay in contacting a restoration company, the more opportunity there is for damage from water and smoke to intensify. It is surprising just how well restoration works in light of how destructive a fire can be. Depending on the damage, a home can often be restored to its before-fire state. A restoration team has a difficult task to perform and a great deal of responsibility, but SERVPRO of Plymouth/Long Lake/Medina's highly trained technicians are well-equipped to return a home to its original condition.

The fire restoration process involves the repair of any structures damaged by smoke, fire, or water. Sub-floor materials undergo inspection for damage and may need to be replaced. Upholstery and curtains are subject to a similar process. Furnishings are taken to a separate location and restored to pre-fire condition. Through the cooperation of the insurance company, the restoration team, and the homeowner, a home can be restored and made safe to live in once again.

SERVPRO of Plymouth/Long Lake/Medina utilizes advanced equipment and technology to quicken the restoration time and to minimize cost. We are proudly serving our community and surrounding areas with 24/7 emergency availability.  Call us at 763-557-7323.

Getting Rid of Soot Odors after Fire Damage

Getting Rid of Soot Odors after Fire Damage

Any homeowner who is unfortunate enough to face a house fire of any size knows that the lingering smell of soot is unpleasant. We at SERVPRO see this all the time in our work – even after restoration is complete and the affected area is thoroughly cleaned, the smell of soot often lingers and is very distressing for homeowners.

In some cases, the best way to remove smoke smells after fire damage is a piece of equipment called an ozone machine. Ozone machines are odor removal powerhouses. They are capable of removing even pungent soot odors and making a home smell fresh and clean once more.

There is only one drawback of ozone machines, and that is that we cannot use them in places where there are people, plants or pets. That means that they are not suitable for use in fire restoration situations where you are still living in your home during cleaning. However, if you have to move out for a few days during restoration, ozone is an ideal solution for post-fire smells.

Ozone is a naturally occurring gas. Ozone occurs after lightning strikes or during thunderstorms and is responsible for the fresh, clean smell you notice in the air after a storm passes.

Ozone is also known as nature’s deodorizer due to its ability to remove unpleasant smells. SERVPRO of Plymouth/Long Lake/Medina uses it in fire restoration situations because it has a powerful deodorizing effect on lingering soot smells.

How does ozone act as a deodorizer? It is a straightforward process. Ozone is an unstable molecule, and it reacts quickly to other molecules when it comes into contact with them. The extra oxygen atom in the ozone binds to odor particles and destroys them. This chemical reaction takes the molecules apart and thus gets rid of the smell.

We train our IICRC-certified technicians to apply ozone with due care and attention. We properly contain the affected area, and our team knows just how much ozone to apply for maximum effect.

Because ozone has a short life, your home is safe to inhabit very soon after the treatment is complete.

For situations where it seems impossible to get rid of that lingering smell, ozone is a powerful solution.

MOLD Remediation BEFORE in Wayzata MOLD - AFTER

Professional Mold Damage Remediation in Wayzata

All it takes is excess humidity or a small water leak for mold damage to form in your home or business. Mold spores can produce harmless allergens, irritants, and other minor health effects. The first step in addressing any growth is to identify and manage the source. If moisture problems are not addressed, then any fungi cleanup or removal will only be a short-term solution. At some point, this type of growth will return.

Here are some interesting mold facts and myths:
• How many types of mold are there? There are more than 100,000 types and species of mold. The common types of home and office mold species are Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Alternaria.

• Can mold can only grow around pipes, leaks or because of floods? Mold does not grow on surfaces that are directly affected by water. Mold spores often occur within the HVAC systems of buildings and homes. They can grow on any surface that has its ideal environment, moisture, and humidity.

• Is black mold worse than other molds? Mold growth comes in a range of colors. Many molds classified black are actually a very dark green. Black mold is not necessarily more dangerous than other species of mold.

• Can this fungus cause skin rashes? The CDC reports that exposure to molds doesn’t contribute to rashes.

• Can I clean mold to eliminate it? Mold can become latent and reactivate. Tiny mold spores replicate every 24 hours, thus often growing back. For porous materials, like ceiling tiles, carpeting, wood, paper, and drywall, surface cleaning is often not enough.

If you see signs of mold damage , don't put out the for sale sign. Instead, contact SERVPRO of Plymouth/Long Lake/Medina. We are your locally owned and operated, certified mold specialists. We have built a standard of ethics and experience recognized in our industry. Let our skilled technicians help you get back to the healthy lifestyle you want for both you and your families future.
